At the age of 62, Bob Mayo had heart surgery for the second time. • He had been feeling so poorly, he did not think he would survive. • But Bob more than survived. • After surgery he was enrolled in a research program through the Congestive Heart Failure Care Center at Hillcrest Medical Center. • Within the first few weeks he was feeling better than he had in years. • His heart function has improved and he’s now able to take his wife dancing. • According to Bob, he’s back in the swing of things.
At 81, Elaine is going strong. • To a large extent she thanks the diabetes management counseling she received at Hillcrest Medical Center for her active life. • Elaine is passionate about managing her diabetes because she believes her husband’s life would have been prolonged with better diabetes management. • She reads labels carefully, watches her eating, and swims several times a week. • In fact, Elaine was so impressed with the Center for Diabetes Management, she now serves as a volunteer. • Elaine is glad to be back in the swim of things.
Gina was pregnant with triplets when her water broke at 20 weeks. • Odds of survival for the babies were very low. • She was admitted to Hillcrest Medical Center on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy, a “scary” 78 days. • Three years later, Gina still talks about the incredible care she was given by her doctors and nurses. • Today Harry, Frank, and Sam are all healthy – and Gina believes “it’s nothing less than a miracle, times three.”
As a surgical nurse, Jodie Swaringim, RN, witnesses first-hand the compassion and expertise of the many surgeons, nurses and staff at Hillcrest. • At 37 years-old, the last thing she expected was to need the help of her co-workers. However, during a routine mammogram, breast cancer was detected and surgery was scheduled. • Today, Jodie is not only a survivor of breast cancer but a firm believer that “nothing happens by chance.” • With no family history of breast cancer, Jodie believes that the mammogram and Hillcrest saved her life.
Thirty years ago, Kathryn was in a very serious car accident where almost her entire right side had to be reconstructed. • She lived in excruciating pain and depended on pain medication just to get by. • She went to the orthopedic specialists at Hillcrest Medical Center and had ankle, knee and back surgery. • In fact, the day of her back surgery she walked out of the hospital and into the grand opening of her family’s restaurant. • With her newfound energy and mobility she’s taken on a full time job and spends her weekends hitting the trails.
The day that Joe and Nicole Kelley moved to Tulsa was the day they learned she was pregnant with twins. • Joe started his morning show at News Talk 740 KRMG radio and Nicole began her research. • She found Hillcrest Medical Center had the most advanced NICU as well as a reputation for the best specialists for high-risk deliveries. • Nicole had the opportunity to prove her research correct when she went into early labor. • But, they had “total trust” in the nurses and doctors who treated them like family. • Which thankfully has grown with the addition of two happy, healthy boys.
After a lifetime spent providing help to others, learning to accept it was difficult for Marion. • However, all of that changed when the 46-year old mother of three awoke at Hillcrest nine days after suffering a serious stroke. • Unable to speak or move the right side of her body, Marion began therapy at Kaiser Rehabilitation Center at Hillcrest Medical Center. • A team of doctors, nurses and therapists helped her regain her speech, as well as the use of muscles paralyzed by her stroke. • Today, she’s back at the job she loves – helping others.
Mary was getting ready for a shopping trip to New York when she experienced shortness of breath. • Mary is a diabetic and decided it would be smart to see a doctor before she left. She was immediately referred to Hillcrest Medical Center where she had triple bypass surgery. • Just a few months after surgery and with the support from the Cardiac Rehab Team, Mary can’t believe how good she feels. • She has lost weight, no longer gets short of breath and is ready to begin hiking and biking. • Right after her shopping trip to New York, that is.
At 34, Melanie was wheelchair bound due to paralysis and pain that resulted from a badly ruptured disc. • Several physicians told her she was not a good candidate for surgery and there was nothing more they could do. • Fortunately, a friend recommended the orthopedic specialists at Hillcrest Medical Center. • Melanie had an innovative surgery, PLIF, that involves inserting a marble between the discs instead of spinal fusion. • Melanie was rolled into the hospital and walked out that same day with just a band-aid to cover the incision. • Today, she’s back to her work and life is beautiful.
At 62, Nick Aston was spending his retirement traveling the Pacific Northwest and Florida. • It was on a visit home that he awoke with severe pressure in his chest. • He went to Hillcrest Medical Center where a cardiologist and a team was waiting to treat him. • Within minutes a balloon angioplasty was performed and a stent was inserted. • A few days later, Nick was released to Hillcrest’s outpatient cardiac rehab program. • Today, Nick is feeling better than ever and is back on the road.
Diabetes runs in Steven’s family • Like his mom, he is enrolled in diabetes management counseling at the Center for Diabetes Management at Hillcrest Medical Center. Together they are successfully working to keep their disease under control. • Steven walks a mile twice a day, he’s eating healthier, and has lost weight since coming to the Center. • He says the program has made life easier, and has even made grocery shopping an opportunity to have fun.
